These heat-tolerant flowers will greet you with blossoms in summer to early fall. Combine them with early-blooming plants for continuous color all year long. Be creative and curious, and have fun!

Celosia

Belonging to the amaranth family, these velvety flowers—whose blooms resemble coral, brains or mini-fireworks—come in a variety of colors and hues that make their unique displays a delight in the garden. While always flashy and bold in shape, their color can vary from softer, antique hues to the vibrant attention-catching reds and purples.

To grow: These are sun-loving plants that prefer well-draining, fertile soil and can tolerate the heat. Water regularly, though be careful not to overwater, especially if planted in pots: They like dry feet. If you have a short growing season, sow seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost date; if you live in a hotter climate, seed directly into warmed-up soil.

Suggested varieties: Celway ‘Purple’, ‘Fruit Punch’, ‘Supercrest’ mix, Texas Plume ‘Vintage Rose’

Cosmos

These beauties feature graceful blooms that dance on the wind and toss their heads in all directions. They are classy, hearty, and sweet in their pastel colors of blush, lemon, and cream. Their upturned, shell-shape heads are a delight in any garden.

To grow: Start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before planting out after the last spring frost date. Be sure to harden off before transplanting. In warm climates, they can be directly seeded once the soil has warmed. Pinching will encourage branching.

Suggested varieties: ‘Apricot Lemonade’, Cupcakes ‘Blush’, ‘Rubenza’

Zinnias

Having evolved over the years from simply pinwheels of primary colors to a range of dusty pinks, corals, and limes, zinnia flowers are a summertime staple in the garden. These plants are prolific bloomers, tolerant of neglect, and one of the easiest to grow. Early pinching encourages branching and longer stems. Keep deadheaded for a constant supply of new growth.

To grow: Zinnias are easy to germinate. In cool climates, start them indoors 4 weeks before the last expected spring frost. Harden off before transplanting; plant out after the last spring frost date. In warm climates, direct sow. Zinnias prefer full sun and fertile soil; space 9 to 12 inches apart to allow for branching.

Suggested varieties: Benary’s Giant ‘Salmon Rose’, Queen 'Lime', Queen 'Orange Blush’, Queen ‘Red Lime'
