Ear mode is the careful one. Twist off the white forehead cap to expose the probe. Insert it gently into the ear canal until it sits snugly, angle it slightly back and up toward the eardrum, and press the button. The reading appears in about a second. Placement matters here, and it explains most disagreements between two consecutive readings.
Touchless mode is the quiet one. Hold the device just off the forehead and read without contact. This is the mode for a sleeping baby, a nap check, or a child who will not tolerate anything near their ear.
Forehead contact mode sits between the two for a quick check.
Reading the result: A temperature is a data point, not a diagnosis. For infants under three months, for any reading that concerns you, or where a clinician has asked for a specific measurement method, follow your pediatrician's guidance on which method to use and when to call.
